Mighty Is Our God

By Charles H. Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)

“Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any:  He is mighty in strength and wisdom” (Job 36:5).

“God is mighty” – that is to say, God is so strong that power immeasurable and inconceivable belongs to Him.  “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God” (Psa. 62:11).  All that God has already done proves His power, but we cannot even from His greatest works guess at what He is yet able to do.  “Lo, these are parts of His ways:  but how little a portion is heard of Him? but the thunder of His power who can understand?” (Job 26:14).

All Power Is From Him

With the Lord nothing is impossible.  Learn somewhat of His power from the following facts.  First, all the power there is in the universe came from God at first, comes from Him still, and at His bidding, would in a single moment cease.  He set the wheel of nature in motion and at His bidding it would cease to turn.  Whatever mental faculty there may be in cherub or seraph, angel or man, it is but an emanation from His creative energy, a ray from His eternal sun, which would cease if He restrained His might.  If He willed it, yonder enormous orbs, which now revolve in order around the central sphere, would rush in wild confusion to inevitable destruction.  The law of gravitation, which holds all things in their places, would be broken in an instant if He withdrew the force which makes the law a power.  There would be no coherence among atoms – no, the atoms themselves would dissolve into non-existence and leave one vast sepulcher, one universal void.  Herein is power so great that we cry with Nehemiah, “Thou, even Thou, art LORD alone; Thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and Thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth Thee” (Neh. 9:6).MORE

Jesus Christ God’s Excellent Gift

By Johann Arndt (1555 – 1621)

Christ is become the true medicine of thy soul, to

restore thee – thy meat and thy drink, to refresh thee

 – thy fountain of life, to quench thy thirst – thy light,

in darkness – thy joy, in sadness – thine advocate,

against thy accusers – wisdom, against thy

folly – righteousness, against thy sin –

sanctification, against thy unworthiness –

redemption, against thy bondage – the

mercy-seat, against the judgment-seat – the

throne of grace, against thy condemnation –

thy absolution, against thy fearful sentence –

thy peace and rest, against an evil conscience –

thy victory, against all thine enemies –

thy champion, against all thy persecutors –

the bridegroom of thy soul, against all rivals –

thy mediator, against the wrath of God –

thy propitiation, against all thy trespasses –

thy strength, against thy weakness –

thy way, against thy wandering –

thy truth, against lying and vanity –

thy life, against death. He is thy counsel,

when thou hast none to advise thee –

thy power, in the midst of thine infirmities –

thy Everlasting Father, when thou art forsaken

and fatherless – thy Prince of Peace, against

the adversary – thy ransom, against thy debt –

thy crown of glory, against thy reproach –

thy teacher, against thy ignorance –

thy Judge, against thy oppressor –

thy King, to destroy the kingdom of Satan –

thine everlasting High Priest, to intercede for thee.

Consider now, O Christian, what an excellent

gift the Lord Jesus Christ is.  Let it be thy daily

prayer and supplication to make a true saving

use of all those heavenly benefits, and to improve

all the offices of Christ to the end for which they

are designed.  What an immense, what an

infinite good thou hast in Christ thy Redeemer!

    – Taken from True Christianity by Johann Arndt.

Christ Is Our Life

By Rich Carmicheal

This issue of the Herald could change your life.   The Lord Jesus Christ – He can change your life!  That is definitely true!  No matter what the condition or circumstances of your life, Jesus can meet you there and work wonders in and through your life.  Consider with me some of the reasons why we can place all of our confidence and hope in Him, even (or especially!) in the most difficult of times:

    1.  His Person, His work and His resources are all-encompassing.  The glory, character, nature, ministry and ability of our Lord Jesus Christ are beyond what we can fully grasp.  Nevertheless, the Bible and our own experience as believers gives us a wonderful idea of how awesome and able He is.  For example, we know that He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End (Rev. 1:8), the Bread of Life (John 6:35), the Captain of our Salvation (Heb. 2:10), the Deliverer (Rom. 11:26), the Everlasting Father (Isa. 9:6), the First and the Last (Rev. 1:17), the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), the Head of the church (Eph. 1:22), the “I Am” (John 8:58), Jesus (Matt. 1:21), King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Tim. 6:15), the Light of the world (John 8:12), the Lord of all (Acts 10:36), the Mighty God (Isa. 9:6), the Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6), the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25), the Rock (1 Cor. 10:4), the Savior (Luke 2:11), the Son of God (Matt. 2:15), the True Vine (John 15:1) and the Word of God (Rev. 19:13).

Of course, many more names and descriptions of Christ could be listed, but even these few reveal His glory and power.  Nothing is beyond the scope of who He is and what He is able to do.  In Him there is salvation, deliverance, peace, forgiveness, joy, healing, provision, protection, wisdom, encouragement, comfort, strength, power, and the list goes on indefinitely!  Our God is able to “supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus”! (Phil. 4:19).

    2.  He promises to always be with us and He actually dwells in us!  Read the names and descriptions above again with these truths in mind – this is the Christ who is with us and in us!  Incredible!  With His presence, power, love, life, grace – again, the list goes on and on – at work within us, we can endure anything, overcome anything, and accomplish anything according to His purposes.  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13).  “…For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’  So we may boldly say:  ‘The LORD is my helper; I will not fear.  What can man do to me?’” (Heb. 13:6).MORE
